There are beautiful carvings with stories from the Mahabharata and Lord Krishna's life depicted and to top it all the is the Most Beautiful Statue of Lord Krishna lifting the Govardhana Hill. Mesmerising.

FREEDOM PARK, BANGALORE

CENTRAL JAIL IS NOW PARK!!!

Bangalore City is truly lucky to have a New Lung Space created in the centre of the city by shifting the Central Jail and building a grand new Green space aptly named Freedom Park.

The sparwling 21 acre Central Jail premises is now converted into a Park and is sure to become a major tourist attraction of Bangalore in the years to come.

HISTORY :

The Central Jail in Bangalore was constructed in 1866 by the British to accommodate the ever rising number of Freedom fighters. Even after the Independance the Jail continued to function and housed many political leaders including BJP leader L.K.Advani.

THE CHANGEOVER :

After shifting the Central Jail to the outskirts of the city, BBMP quickly got into the act and in 2004 decided to convert the place into a Park. The BBMP and Bangalore Agenda Task Force intiated a national level competition for the design of the park. The Design was enthrusted to Soumitro Ghosh and Nisha Ghosh who won the competition and the result is a eye pleasing architecture with greenery and historical heritage untouched in one place.

The Park was named as Freedom Park and was inaugarated by L.K.Advani, http://blog.lkadvani.in/blog-in-english/from-jail-to-freedom-park

who was incidentally a former inmate, on 2nd March 2009.

THE ATTRACTIONS :

The original Watch Tower and some of the Barracks have been left untouched and surprisingly have been designed in such a way that they blend so well with the park that you will feel that all these were a part of the Jail since long.

The Jail Museum has some antique photos and has a great view of the whole Park.

The Hospital Block too has been retained as heritage structure.

The Children's Play Area is a big boon to the kids of the area and is very very popular even with the parents.

A 300 seater Amphitheatre is very popular and hosts cultural every holidays and Sundays.

Every Evening and Sundays, the Musical Fountain is an added attraction.

See Video http://www.indyarocks.com/videos/Jail-is-now-Park-1-316031

Some finishing touch is still being done with attractions like the Cafe, craft stall, etc coming up. All this will make this place only more attractive and irrestible.

The Park has restricted timings. Open from 5AM to 8Am and again in the evening from 5pm to 8PM.

There is NO Entry Fees as of now, but there are plans to introduce the same.

DO NOT MISS THIS ONE.
